Lightning strikes

Lightning is the number one killer for weather related deaths in our area.

Whether you live here or are visiting, you should be aware that our area is known as the "Lightning Capital" of the United States. On average, lightning is responsible for more weather-related deaths in Florida than all other weather hazards combined, and Florida has the highest number of lightning casualties of all 50 states. In our county there has been over 10 lightning related deaths since 1970.
We are very fortunate to have a world class National Weather Service office in Melbourne that is on the cutting edge of lightning research and information. Please link to their web site for more information or see our resource list for web sites. The commitment for saving life and property is high amongst the emergency management and weather community. Being aware of lightning characteristics along with basic safety rules can save your life as well as those around you if you apply this knowledge
